Well I'm happy I ran across thiis thread.... I was about to reinstall guild wars because "the bosses don't look right"
I honestly thought that this was an issue only I had from the last update and was willing to do a clean install.
I don't understand why they changed the bosses - they were cool before, now they're dull.

Judging by the fact that the game seems to be randomly reverting to the old boss auras, as well as occasionally coming up with some crazy different auras, I'm convinced that it's a bug. Even if it wasn't, I prefer the old auras, though I do admit that's a great shot of Bazzr.
Another messed-up boss aura posted over on GWO:

Not all bosses- the warrior minotaur boss outside Ice Tooth Cave, for example. And the visible auras really do help with quick profession identification without clicking on them and watching for skills- so your monk can get the duct tape out if you see an ele boss coming

I went from the grand court of sebelkeh heading north where you have those few beetles and another group with an boss in there, the new aura however didn't work vey well because the boss skin is close to the color of the paragon aura boss, so the boss appeared like the rest of his mob, or like without aura. A tat annoying imo, also there was a Heket boss in forum highlights that i coudn't see very well, until halve my party was wiped and i decided to check for boss names.
The new aura is not good, also when it does work correctly i find that most of the bosses look ugly, it makes Mursaat bosses look worse than MR BEAN.

The cube maps for bosses really didnt need much of a change, the 'outline' style they had before i thought looked nice, giving them something of a surrounding glow effect no matter which angle you were looking at them from
Some of the newer ones are not that bad, but hard to distinguish, especially necromancer/ranger
In pve the change probably wasnt necessary at all, but i could see why it might be for pvp stuff... o.O

I like the new one in that is doesn't obscure the model & looks less bizarre. But it's a bit harder to tell what they are now.

i like the new aura b/c it plainly fits into the game better. maybe to further differentiate bosses from each other, they could add something like player divine aura to all boss movement.

I must say I like the new aura in terms of being more subtle, but I don't like how it doesn't look like an aura, just a retint.
Why not borrow something from WarCraft III heroes (hey, they probably "borrowed" a lot of concepts from Blizzard when they left them) - add like a glowing circle (color based on profession) at their feet?
A "certain undead friend" from Hell's looks like he's been partially digested.

I can understand why some people may think the old aura is sorta cartoony, but personally I am already fond of it.
Anyway, the new "aura" isnt even an aura, idk what people smoke at night but this is called Tinting overall model color, and its pretty much garbage. It's probably bugged and wasn't applied correctly, because if we are getting a new aura then it has to bleed off of the body model in a glow - thats what it should have been.

They wouldn't really be borrowing (how do you borrow from your own works?), they most likely directed the ideas themselves and can use it where ever they see fit.

I had an aura glitch recently that reminded me of the one higher up. It was literally impossible to tell the profession because it was a violently bright rainbow that swirled around the boss.
In my opinion the older aura needed a serious change. It was useful at first, though ranger and necromancer auras always bugged me, however I found them to become a bit garish and hard to look at.
I'm still on the fence if the change they made was the right one, though I agree that it was needed.
How would you have changed the way that we identify bosses?
Fire that swirls around them with different colors?
A little capitol letter that dances around them?
A dark cloud that hovers over them shooting lighting in the appropriate color?
Parrots perched on their shoulder with different color plumage?

How about ANet does away with the effect completely? Would this be so terrible.
After all, all Bosses have names, so it's kind of hard to miss them.
If any effect is needed just slap a colored halo over their heads.

NO.
Many Bosses, specially in Prophecies, have no special names.
There are 6 Mursaat bosses with no special names, for example.
But whatever they made to the Boss Aura, they have glitched it.
The glow is hard to see in some monsters, and some are hard to say if they are Ranger or Necromancer, or Paragon or Dervihs.
The new aura is plainly horrible, making bosses look like ghost or like plasticsoldiers.
The two effects combined would make bosses look pretty and easy to recognize.
The aura should be a mixing of the current two systems.
A bit of colorizing, not so hard like now, and then the glow, affected by the ara lighting.
I also think that the 'Level X' naming system for monsters should be completely changed to the 'ClassX' system playing characters and some NPCs have.
Monsters with no class would keep the 'Level X', though.

i just killed Markis... Or at least i think it was Markis... hard to tell with the auras. He looked like a green stripey thing, and i couldnt even see his face, or any other details on him, just a green stripey mass.

My husband and I decided we hate the new "aura". It is so faint you can't even tell it is there most of the time. Often we don't even know there is a boss until someone gets whacked for 200+. When a mob is upon your group you usually don't have time to check through every name (if they are named, and if the name doesn't look a heck of a lot like the monsters around it ) so we go by plain visual recognition. I really wish they would change them back...

I've gotten in the habit of always using ctrl to see what to attack first so I've never had much trouble with distinguishing if there is a boss in a group. Like most others, necro and ranger bosses have been the most difficult so I resort to looking at their cast bars.
The old auras are familiar, but I think with tweaking and time the new aura will be very helpful.

I don't like the new aura in PvE but I like it a lot in PvP (which I think is why it was made.) You can now easily see what npcs look like while still telling what team they are on.
Just try a hero battle and see what I mean. I can actually tell what kind of armor my heroes are using now instead of seeing a bright glowing blob lol.
Of course, I don't know for certain that it was made for PvP reasons... so don't use that as fuel to claim that ANet wants to ruin PvE for the sake of PvP
